Cemeteries and Their Stories,
Madison County, Indiana
Location: south side of CR 250N, between CRs 350W and 400W
The Melson is still part of private property, but the land owners have taken a unique approach to having a cemetery in the their midst. When the larger property was purchased, the cemetery which was across a creek and up on a hill had been part of a pasture for livestock. The stones had been uprooted and strewn about by the animals. The new owners gathered up the stones and made a gravel platform, as seen in the middle picture above, in which to place the markers. They then leveled and mowed the cemetery area, and planted a few flowers. They even built a bridge across the creek to access what has become their private park.
Even if the MCCC were to be asked to reset the stones, the commission's policy is to reset them in strips of concrete as family groups since the original locations of the graves can not be ascertained. In a sense, the owners have handled the situation in almost the same way as the commission would.
The land owners live in the first house west of the cemetery and do not mind visitors enjoying their little park, but one should ask permission first out of courtesy.
