Union Township

Location: east side of CR 450E, between SR 236 and CR 400S

    Not to be confused with the Old Kisling/Keesling Cemetery in Adams Township, this Ellison/New Kessling is located in Union Township and is much larger than its predecessor.  The Kisling/Keesling family helped settle the land in both townships as well as in northern Henry County. Jacob Kisling,1813/4-1895, is among the twenty-five family members resting here.  One of the earliest Kisling graves if for Susan Kisling who died in 1859 at "20y 1m 9d." 

    Among the other families represented at the Keesling is that of brothers Amos,1803-1872, and Samuel Betts Gustin,1798-1874, who moved their people from Warren County, Ohio, soon after the territory was opened and farmed the southern sections of the township.  The families of John Cummins, 1817-1889, and Abraham Smith,1801-1881, are also gathered here.  This settlers' burial ground still serves local residents.

The stone of Amos Gustin, 1803-1872, and family is on the left; the stone of  Amos's brother Samuel Betts Gustin, 1798-1874, and wife Elizabeth Diltz Gustin, 1799-1867, is on the right.  Interestingly, this Gustin family can be traced back to ancestors who fought in the French and Indian War in the 1750s and in King Philip's War in the late 1600s as well as to pilgrim fathers who arrived on the Mayflower.

 

Granville Pearson has an interesting stone commemorating his death at Nashville, TN, during the Civil War.  Sadly, he died on January 20, 1865, towards the end of the conflict, " Aged 20 y. 2 mo. 14 d."  The flags are at the top while his regiment is listed under his name.  At the very  bottom of the stone can be seen what is left of a bible verse, now faded in the soft white stone. 

This grave marker, as well as others, was reconstructed and reset in 1969 by the Cemetery Conditions Committee of the Madison County Historical Society.  In the late 1960s, before the Indiana state laws providing for the protection of pioneer cemeteries, the MCHS searched out and then mapped the locations of any early settlers' burial grounds, undertook their reclamations, and made a list of gravestone transcriptions.  Their work and research is still of inestimable value.

 

The picture at left is of James Ellison's marker.  Although not listed below, by some oversight, James was fifty-three years old at the time of his death May 15, 1856.
