Pipe Creek Township

Location: northeast corner of Washington St. (575N) and Clyde St. in Frankton

Named for the family who first owned this land just south of Frankton, the French Cemetery is one of two pioneer graveyards to first serve town residents.  Now the much newer and modern I.O.O.P. (Knights of Pythius) Cemetery is just across the street from the French.

The French family is listed by historian Samuel Harden in his book The Pioneers as early settlers to Pipe Creek Township.

 

There are at least three generations of the French family here.  Patriarch James, born around 1801, and wife Mahala, born around 1807, have this early 20th century grave marker, at left, probably erected by descendents.  James and Mahala both died in the mid 1850s.  A grandson's stone at right is still in excellent condition and quite legible.

 

Unique in styling for a child's grave, this marker looks like a small bench with a tufted and tasseled cushion.  There is no other gravestone like this in Madison County.  No name or dates were cut into the stone.

 

John Laden/Layden's Victorian-styled stone, at left, is in good condition.  Even the inscription "Gone but not forgotten" at the bottom is legible.  The hand pointing to heaven symbolizes John's religious faith.

Members of the Berry family--John and son Nineveh specifically--founded Anderson and helped with the early formation of the county.  This stone, at right, proclaims that further generations remained, were involved, and sacrificed.
